We at Woebgon Bassets got off to a really great start in the AKC conformation show ring in 2013. Our bassets did well through out the whole year. This page documents that success.

We hope to see you at a dog show.

New Champion

Ch. Woebgon’s Gunslinger

"Jesse"

Joy’s boy, “Jesse”, finished his AKC Championship at the Kennel Club of Palm Springs Show by winning Winners Dog and Best of Winners on January 5, 2013. He finished his AKC Championship under the esteemed Italian breeder/judge, Mr. Paolo Dondina. Mr. Dondina has judged Best in Show at both Crufts in England and at the Westminster Kennel Club Show in New York.

This is the fifth AKC Champion for his mother, Joy, which qualified her for The Register of Merit (ROM) that is awarded by the Basset Hound Club of America to the top producing Basset Hound Sires and Dams who have offspring finishing AKC titles. The title "ROM" following a basset dam's registered name designates that she has produced at least five get who have been successful in finishing an AKC title. Joy produced with six AKC Champions. Two became Grand Champions.

For 2013 we limited our trip up to the Ventura shows to one day. Doc, Sassy and Heidi were entered in the Ventura County Dog Fanciers Show under breeder/judge Ron Likins.

New Grand Champion

GCh. Ch. Woebgon’s Doc Howliday

"Doc"

Doc joins his Mother, Joy, and Sister, Sassy, as Woebgon Bassets’ Grand Champions. Woebgon's Doc Howliday was Best of Breed at the Ventura County Dog Fanciers Show on January 22, 2013 under breeder/judge Ron Lukins. This win gave Doc enough points to complete the requirements for his Grand Championship. GCh. Ch. Woebgon's Doc Howliday is owned by Walt and Vickie Ross and co-owned by Don and Pam Bullock. For all but five of the points Doc was shown by Vickie. Doc is pictured with Vickie.

Woebgon’s Nehi (“Heidi”)

At the show where Doc finished his Grand Championship his half sister, Woebgon’s Nehi was Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed for two points under breeder/judge Ron Lukins. This is Heidi’s fourth show and her first win.

At her very next show Heidi was also selected Winners Bitch for an additional two points (shown below). She and Pam are both enjoying the shows.

Heidi was Winners Bitch and Best of Winners under Judge Patricia Trotter. Mrs. Trotter commented on how athletic Heidi is.

GCh. Ch. Woebgon’s Kickapoo Joy Juice, ROM

(“Joy”)

The Basset Hound Club of America, Inc. (BHCA) confirmed Joy’s Register of Merit in March of 3013.

We had some great wins at 2013 Basset Hound Specialty Shows. This is the third year in a row that we’ve come away with a big win on more than one of our bassets.

GCh. Ch. Woebgon’s Kickapoo Joy Juice, ROM

(“Joy”)

The shows started out with Joy (GCh. Ch. Woebgon’s Kickapoo Joy Juice, ROM) winning Best in Veteran Sweepstakes under breeder/judge Bethany Berger.

GCh. Ch. Woebgon’s Dodge City Sarsaparilla

“Miss Sassy"

That was followed later in the day with our biggest win of the weekend when Miss Sassy was selected Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed. With Miss Sassy’s win we retired the trophy. Miss Sassy was our third bitch to win BOS at the Saturday BHCSC Specialty. Our other bitches listed on the trophy are GCh. Ch. Woebgon’s Kickapoo Joy Juice, ROM in 2005 and Ch. Woebgon’s Snow White from the Bred by Exhibitor Class in 2007. The trophy dates back to 2000.

GCh. Ch. Woebgon’s Kickapoo Joy Juice, ROM

(“Joy”)

Then at the end of the day Joy, who had just had her ROM confirmed by BHCA, was selected as number one in the Brood Bitch Class. She appeared for the judging with two of her kids, Miss Sassy and Doc. They were the only two of her get entered in the show.

“Miss Sassy”

GCh. Ch. Woebgon’s Doc Howliday

“Doc”

On Sunday both Miss Sassy and her brother Doc were awarded Awards of Merit from breeder/judge Jane Treiber. A great way to end the weekend of Specialty shows.

Woebgon’s Pink Floyd

“Floyd”

On Saturday, April 13th Woebgon’s Pink Floyd, brother of Doc, Miss Sassy and Jesse was Winners Dog and Best of Winners for a three point major at the Terry-All Kennel Club Show in Colorado. Floyd is owned by Valerie Argyle in Utah. At this point he needed a second major to finish his AKC Championship. We’re very excited for both Valerie and Floyd.

Woebgon’s Nehi (“Heidi”)

On Saturday, April 13th Woebgon’s Nehi was Best in Sweepstakes and Group 3 in the Scent Hound Sweepstakes Group at the Western Hound Association of Southern California Show.

GCh. Ch. Woebgon’s Dodge City Sarsaparilla

“Miss Sassy”

Miss Sassy was Best of Breed at both of the Angeles Canyon KC shows held April 18 & 19 at the Industry Hills Expo Center. They are her first Best of Breed wins.

GCh. Ch. Woebgon’s Doc Howliday

“Doc”

Doc was Best of Breed at the Lake Mathews Kennel Club Show on April 28th. He was shown to the win by Don.

Woebgon’s Nehi (“Heidi”)

For the Memorial Day Weekend shows this year we decided just to go to two of the four shows. We knew that Friday the traffic would be bad so we ruled out Friday. Don wanted the watch the Indy 500 and the Coca Cola 600 races so we decided not to enter the show on Sunday. That meant that we’d just enter Heidi and Miss Sassy in the Saturday and Monday shows. Our friends entered Doc on Saturday too.

On Saturday we had a judge we’d never seen before. Miss Sassy was Best of Breed, Heidi was Winners Bitch, Best of Winners and Best Bred by Exhibitor plus Doc was Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed. This is a first for us. We’ve never entered a show and taken those three awards. It was another great day at the dog show.

Then on Monday the judge gave us an even bigger surprise. Miss Sassy was Select Bitch which was nice, but Heidi was awarded Best of Breed over Miss Sassy and two other Champions. That was another first for Pam. She had never handled a class dog or bitch to a Best of Breed over other Champions. That really topped off our weekend.

On Saturday, July 20th Tradewind’s Caicos was Winners Dog at a show in Florida for two points at seven months. He was shown to the win by Ellen Ferguson, a longtime basset hound breeder. We had already made arrangements with Ellen and the breeder of Caicos, Jeffie Casey, for us to bring him out to California as a member of the Woebgon Bassets Pack.

for

3 Point Major

Heidi won her first major at the Santa Barbara Kennel Club show over an entry of 13 girls on 8/25/13. She needed one more major to finish her AKC Championship.

As an aside, Caicos was Reserve Winners Dog (that’s second place for the non-show crowd) both days for his first two shows in Southern California.

New Champion

Woebgon’s Nehi

(“Heidi”)

Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed

Best Owner Handled Basset Hound

for her second 3 Point Major

Heidi won her second major at the Cabrillo Kennel Club Show at Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center, CA under judge Mrs. Karen C. Wilson to finish her AKC Championship.

This is the first time that Pam has handled a basset for all their points. The two of them have been a great team in the show ring.

Over the years at least one of the shows of the Kennel Club of Riverside has been good for Woebgon Bassets. This year was no different. While Saturday was a bust Sunday proved to be a different story. It was a great day at the dog show. All three of our entries came home with a win. Judge Mrs. Debra Thornton was very complementary of all three of our bassets.

As an aside, Mrs. Thornton was also the judge who awarded Ch. Woebgon’s Pink Floyd his second major to finish his Championship the very next weekend in Colorado (see below). She really likes our breeding.

Heidi was Select Bitch at the San Gabriel Valley Kennel Club Show on Saturday, 11/02/13 under Judge Ms. Marjorie Martorella. This was a 4 point major and another win over other AKC Champions toward her requirements for an AKC Grand Championship.

We did not have a picture taken.

New Champion

Ch. Woebgon’s Pink Floyd

“Floyd”

Woebgon’s Pink Floyd finished the qualifications for his AKC Championship at the Southern Colorado Kennel Club, Inc. Show on November 8, 2013 under Judge Mrs. Debra L. Thornton. Floyd becomes the sixth AKC Champion for his mother, Joy - GCh. Ch. Woebgon’s Kickapoo Joy Juice, ROM.

Congratulations and thank you to Valerie for her new Champion. It’s not easy living in Utah to finish a basset hound and she stuck with him.

Ch. Woebgon’s Pink Floyd

“Floyd”

Owned by Valerie Argyle

Heidi and Pam finished out the year with some important wins. She was Select Bitch at two of the three shows and was Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed at the third show. All three wins were majors and wins over other AKC Champions toward her requirements for an AKC Grand Championship. Heidi now has 18 points of the 25 needed for her Grand Championship and has met all the other requirements.

Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed

Woebgon’s Nehi

(“Heidi”)

We are very excited about our success in 2013. It was another great year in the show rings for Woebgon Bassets. Thank you to all the judges.

We’d like to thank all those who have followed us this year, especially those who have our bassets. Knowing that they have loving homes is very important to us. You are all very special people.
